Unlocked and Loaded - The Storage of American Firearms (Paperback)

How do Americans store firearms in their home? Do they keep their firearms unloaded and locked away as is often recommended? The current research examines the nature of gun storage in American homes. Little research has looked at this important policy and public health issue and little is known about gun storage in general. Public concern about firearms and accidental injuries and deaths compel an examination of firearm storage and handling. Gun storage may result from the purpose for which guns are owned or used. Rational choice theory allows the expansion of this idea of utility by explaining how individuals may rely on their cultural and situational experiences to make decisions about firearms storage. This dissertation adds to the current knowledge about firearms by examining how cultural experiences and situational contexts associated with gun ownership might increase the likelihood that owners keep firearms loaded and accessible in their homes.
