Understood Betsy (Paperback)

Orphaned as a baby, Betsey is taken in by her flighty maiden aunts. Totally smothered by their overly protective, but well intentioned determination to mother her, Betsey grows into a frail and timid little girl who completely relies on her "Dear Aunt Frances " . When one of the aunts is taken ill, Betsey is sent to live with cousins the aunts heartily disapproved of. There she begins a journey of self discovery and learns many lessons about life, people and relationships. Understood Betsy is one of the best children's books ever written. It isn't quite "Alice in Wonderland," but it is a close runner up. Loke the immortal "Alice" it is as interesting to adults as to children, if not more so . One can read it over and over and always enjoy it.

Reviews

This is truly one of the most beautiful pieces of classic children's fiction. My children and I were spellbound by the winsome characters, the lovely language, and the interesting glimpses into American life at the turn of the previous century. My enjoyment of it was somewhat spoiled though, by the inferiority of this imprint. It contained some misprints, various spelling mistakes and other mishaps that are, sadly, so common in this type of cheap reprint of older classics. I would be looking for a better copy by a more reputable publishing house to replace ours with. I'm definitely hanging on to this one until such time, though, for despite the faults of modern mass-production, the story itself shines bright and beautiful and deserves a place in the library of all families who value living books.
