In 1833 he became Professor of Philosophy at Koningsberg, and occupied for forty-six years, until his death in 1879, the chair held for twenty-four years by the celebrated Herbart, and for thirty-four years by the still more celebrated Kant. He wrote extensive works on philosophy and literature, and published the present work in 1848.
