This volume contains papers from the 13th Anglo-German colloquium assembling medieval German scholars from the English- and German-speaking world at the University of Bristol in 1993. The overarching topic is approached from a variety of different thematic and methodological vantages and levels. Rigorous systematisation was not the aim, nor would this have been sensible, given the present state of research. The contents are arranged in accordance with formal and thematic criteria to point up important connections and contiguities. The volume is designed to encourage further thematic, methodological and theoretical reflection on the various subjects it broaches.
