In Toronto, after the accidental death of her son, Abby leaves an abusive marriage to build a new life with her daughter. She becomes the owner of a florist shop and, in a chance encounter in a bookstore, meets the love of her life.

After travelling to England and meeting Simon's family, Abby plans for their future together. Her happiness is short lived when Simon is killed while on consignment as a war correspondent in Angola.
